A waste test can be performed to determine whether the milking machine has sufficient reserve capacity. Measure the average vacuum in the receiver with all units running and all teat cups connected. Then open a milking unit to allow air to flow through all four teat cups and measure the recipient’s average vacuum again. If the milking machine has more than 32 units, open a second unit to admit air. If the average vacuum level in the receiver falls by less than 2 kPa (0.6 ”hg), the system will have enough spare capacity to accommodate the unit failure.
